Finally got Ubuntu 19.04 Running on the Lenovo E485

The Lenovo E485 is finally running Linux. I installed a second 500GB SSD and 8GB more memory for a total of 16GB. To get Linux running on various Lenovo E series and A series there is a line of code that is added to the Grub boot loader “ivrs_ioapic[32]=:00:14.1 ivrs_ioapic[33]=00:00.1” This cures the table in the Bios that Lenovo needs to patch to allow Linux to run. The only issue with my setup on Ubuntu is that the Bluetooth will only operate after resuming from sleep and on Ubuntu 19.04 suspend/resume is kind of flaky. I also have KDE Neon 5.16 on a second partition where suspend/resume is working just fine. The Bluetooth issue appears from forum comments to be a kernel issue.

There will be a full video on how the laptop and OS is running and what has to be done on the Windows 10 side to get everything playing nice with each other.

  1. Hello, thanks for the content. I’m new to linux, and I really wanted to install it on this computer. Could you make a video explaining how to perform GRUB change operation to install ubuntu? I searched for a video or website that explained this and did not find it. Thank you.

    1. It depends on what you want to do. Are you dual booting Windows and Linux or just running Linux. If just installing Linux it is easy just to use the whole disk and let the installer install GRUB in the boot area. If Dual booting than Windows always wants to be in the first partition. Linux will resize a Win partition but always BACKUP your drive so on the rare chance of an issue one may restore back to the way the drive was when starting. I had it easy because I installed Linux on the second SSD with GRUB on the second drive. My computer also has UEFI so the machine boots from the second SSD and I can choose Win10 or the default boot of Ubuntu. Here is a good video on dual booting https://youtu.be/MSVV_EoApdo
I will try to video an installation soon as I am getting ready to install Fedora30 along side of Ubuntu.
